Susan got a trach yesterday. The doctors have been concerned because the lower lobe of her left (new) lung has not been expanding due to some fluid/mucus buildup. With the trach, they should be able to keep it better expanded. They’re also going in there regularly to clean it out. The surgery went fine, and she was taken off of the ventilator this morning. She’s now breathing on her own through the trach with some oxygen.
Nearly a week out of surgery, and it’s a slow process of recovery. She may or may not (doctors are unsure still) have her feeding tube changed to a different kind where they can also drain from her stomach. There is still some uncertainty about whether or not she is aspirating into her lungs.
It is amazing to us how much of medicine is purely educated guessing.
