Susan is now free of her trach AND oxygen! She is breathing on her own and doing great. She is also able to talk, which has been a great relief to her and everyone involved with her care.
Her feeding tube is clogged so tomorrow she is being taken down to interventional radiology to have it fixed. She is eating more by mouth, but still not enough in terms of calories. So far, the plan is for her to go home with the feeding tube, which will be used to feed her at night, and to eat by mouth during the day.
Word in the hospital halls is that she may be discharged this Friday, but everyone except Dr. Hoopes is thinking that she won’t be quite ready that soon. Susan has been practicing climbing stairs, but not yet ready to tackle the two flights that lead to her apartment door. We will see what happens.
